 Purpose:         Review what the symptoms are and what they mean to better identify them in your clients, and know what to do about them.

Three Categories of Symptoms
 1.      Positive . 2.      Negative  3.      Disorganized  
Positive Symptoms
 1.   Hallucinations a)      Visualb)      Tactilec)      Olfactoryd)      Audioe)      Gustatory 
2.   Delusions
 a)      Paranoidb)      Grandiosec)      Bizarre Negative Symptoms – lack of: 1.      Emotional Expression – affective flattening

2.      Thought & Speech – alogia

3.      Pleasure – anhedonia4.      “Goal directed behavior” – avolition5.      Catatonic 
Disorganized Symptoms
 

1.      Disorganized speech

2.      Disorganized behavior   Diagnosis of Schizophrenia: 1 month of at least 2 of the following: ·        hallucinations·        delusions·        disorganized speech·        disorganized behavior·        catatonic behavior·        any negative symptoms 

6 months during which some of the above are present, along with serious impairments in occupational and/or social functioning.
